The competition, held under the leadership of Dr. Jane Wathuta, Dean of Strathmore Law School, draws students from universities across the country to analyse Kenya’s tax laws and policies and propose practical improvements.

What makes this hackathon challenging is the format: teams only receive the problem on the day of the competition and must put together written submissions and oral arguments within a tight time window. It rewards legal knowledge, yes, but also the ability to think and organise quickly under pressure. Before the competition got underway, a roundtable with senior tax professionals from across Kenya was held on 8 May, giving students a chance to hear directly from practitioners shaping the country’s tax policy.

The University of Embu entered two teams, and the results were encouraging. Kennedy Ndingi of Team 1 earned a placement with CDH Kenya, one of Africa’s leading commercial law firms, and also received a tablet from Deloitte Kenya in recognition of his performance. Every participating student received airtime from Safaricom, and the whole group was invited to a mentorship session at PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Nairobi offices. The team members were: Kennedy Ndigi, Jewel Muthoni, Collins Maingi, Yose Alvin, Charles Muriuki and Gladwell Wanjiku. The team was coached and accompanied by the Charmian of Commercial Law Department, Dr. Wilson Ngigi.

The hackathon had strong industry backing this year, with support from PricewaterhouseCoopers, Anjarwalla and Khanna (ALN), KPMG, Deloitte Kenya, CDH Legal, and Dentons, among others. That backing translated into real prizes, with winners in line for internships at these firms, giving students a direct route into Kenya’s tax and commercial law sector.

Participating in events like this fits well with what the University of Embu School of Law is trying to do: produce graduates who can engage critically with the law, not just recite it. As tax issues become more complex and cross-border disputes more common, students who have wrestled with real policy questions under competition conditions will be better placed to contribute meaningfully in their careers.

Congratulations to all six students who represented the university so well. In the new academic year, the Department of Commercial Law is considering running its own hackathon-style events to give more students this kind of hands-on experience.
