Great Lakes Regional Training Program and Moot Competition

SCHOOL OF LAW STUDENTS ATTEND THE GREAT LAKES REGIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMME AND MOOT COMPETITION IN INTERNATIONAL LAW AND HUMAN RIGHTS BE HELD IN KIGALI, RWANDA

The Great Lakes Regional Training Programme and Moot competition took place in Kigali, Rwanda between the 8th -14th October, 2023.
The training provided the students with the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge and skills on issues of protection of biodiversity during armed conflicts in the Great Lake Region. Students from 30 universities from Burundi, Kenya, DR Congo, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania participated in the training and moot competition. The faculty was ably represented by myself; Miss Christabel Mideva Eboso, the Patron of the University of Embu Moot Society (UoEMMS).

The following students represented the University of Embu, School of Law;
a) Munene Njoroge L250/ 18380/2019
b) Manyange Margaret L250/ 18380/2019

The first day of the training, being 9th October, 2023 involved the opening of the training at the Serena Hotel, Kigali and round table discussions that involved presentation by renowned academics in the International Humanitarian Law and International Criminal Law spaces in the world.
The preliminary and semi- finals involved assessment of the written memorials submitted by the participants from different institutions. All the University proceeded to the finals of the moot competition which took place on 10th and 11th October, 2023 at the Kigali University.
The University of Embu was ranked position 4 after Catholic University, Makerere University and Moi University at the finals of the competition.
Our students did exemplary well, given that a total of 30 universities across East Africa participated in the competition. This being the 1st international moot training and competition that the University has participated in, the students’ performance was exemplary. Further, I wish to note that the moot competition involved an understanding of International Criminal Law which is not taught as a course unit in the University. However, our students went over and above and prepared themselves thoroughly. The fact that University of Embu, school of Law is still a young university, it was noted at the finals that our students outshined long standing institutions that participated in the competition.
