The School of Law’s Legal Aid Clinic embarked on a significant outreach initiative with a visit to the Embu GK prison on March 20th, 2024. The primary objective of this visit was to engage with inmates, addressing their legal inquiries and challenges while providing them with valuable legal guidance. Under the supervision of Dr. Wilson Ngigi and Dr. Felix Makori our students directly rendered pro bono legal services to economically disadvantaged members of the community.
During this visit, the Legal Aid Clinic donated copies of essential legal documents, including the constitution of Kenya 2010 and pertinent statutes such as the Penal Code Act, Criminal Procedure Act, Evidence Act, and Sexual Offences Act. This provision of legal resources serves to empower inmates with knowledge of their rights and enhances their ability to navigate the legal landscape effectively.
The day culminated in a friendly football match between the inmates and our students, fostering positive interactions and promoting a sense of camaraderie. This holistic approach to engagement underscores the School of Law’s commitment to community service and the promotion of legal literacy.
The visit to the Embu GK prison represents a meaningful endeavor, reflecting the ethos of the School of Law in fostering social responsibility and contributing positively to society.
