Mwangolo Kombo Shaibu, a fourth-year law student of the University of Embu wins the first position with a cash prize award of CHF 450, in the essay writing competition of the 21st Century, organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The competition was organized specifically for undergraduate students from East African Universities. It included students from more than 50 Universities from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Rwanda, South Sudan and Somalia. The competition received a total of 118 entries from universities in the 7 Eastern African countries.
Students were required to conduct a thorough research and come up with an analysis of the challenges posed by the convergence of armed conflicts, climate change and environmental degradation, as well as the international humanitarian law rules, policies and practical measures that could address these challenges. The judging criteria included 30 marks for critical thinking, 30 marks for the structure, referencing and evidence of research and 40 marks for the knowledge of the subject matter.
